{"id":3185,"date":"2020-08-11T13:34:37","date_gmt":"2020-08-11T11:34:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stocklogistic.com\/?p=3185"},"modified":"2020-08-11T13:38:04","modified_gmt":"2020-08-11T11:38:04","slug":"the-isps-code-in-the-maritime-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stocklogistic.com\/en\/logistics\/the-isps-code-in-the-maritime-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"THE ISPS CODE IN THE MARITIME SECTOR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The<strong> ISPS<\/strong> (International Ship and Port Facilities Security), or<strong> International Ship and Port Facility Security Code<\/strong>, is a protocol adopted by the International Maritime Organization, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imo.org\/en\/about\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IMO<\/a>, in 2004 to establish a common framework for <strong>cooperation and security<\/strong> to detect threats and take action to prevent them.<\/p>\n<p>The main <strong>objectives<\/strong> of the ISPS Code are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To establish an<strong> international framework<\/strong> that channels cooperation between governments, government agencies, local administrations and the shipping industry to detect security threats and take action against any event that may affect the security of the ship or port facilities.<\/li>\n<li>Define the <strong>roles and responsibilities of governments<\/strong>, shipping companies or port institutions involved in any maritime traffic operation.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that there is <strong>continuous, effective and fluid information<\/strong> relating to the safety of ships and facilities.<\/li>\n<li>Provide a <strong>methodology<\/strong> for assessing the situation in order to have <strong>plans and procedures<\/strong> in place to react to changes in the different levels of security stipulated in the ISPS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stocklogistic.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stock Logistic<\/a>, as specialists in <strong>transporting goods anywhere<\/strong>, we work with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stocklogistic.com\/en\/ocean-transport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">main shipping companies<\/a> in the world, which, in turn, are governed by the <strong>ISPS code<\/strong> in all their operations and journeys.<\/p>\n<h2>Three levels<\/h2>\n<p>The Code applies to ships on international voyages of <strong>at least 500 GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage)<\/strong>, mobile offshore drilling units and port facilities serving such ships. It is an international protocol that is structured in two parts: the <strong>mandatory requirements and the guidelines.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ISPS Code establishes <strong>three security levels<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Level 1 (<strong>Standard<\/strong>): This is the level at which ships and port facilities normally operate.<\/li>\n<li>Level 2 (<strong>Enhanced<\/strong>): This shall be applied if there is an increase in risk.<\/li>\n<li>Level 3 (<strong>Exceptional<\/strong>): This is set for the period of time when a security incident is probable or imminent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why was it created?<\/h2>\n<p>The i<strong>ncrease in international maritime traffic,<\/strong> together with such important events as the attacks of 9\/11 in 2001, led to the beginning of talk about the <strong>real risk <\/strong>of threats that could affect maritime trade.
