Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 health crisis, air transport<\/a> has played a very important role in guaranteeing deliveries and supplies of the most essential goods, especially in the case of pharmaceutical products<\/strong>. As explained here<\/a>, air logistics<\/strong>, characterised by its reliability and immediacy, has been crucial in this long period of pandemic.<\/p>\n

One could say that 2020 has marked a before and after in the industry. Paradoxically, however, the numbers do not follow. Air cargo volumes at Spanish airports in the AENA network<\/a> carried a total of 787.848 tonnes of cargo<\/strong>, down 26.3% compared to 2019, at the close of 2020. This is due to the fact that a significant part of the usual cargo<\/strong> was moved in commercial passenger aircraft (converted to freighters) due to the effects on tourism of the restrictions and COVID-19.<\/p>\n

By airports<\/h2>\n

The airport that recorded the highest number of movements<\/strong> in 2020 was Adolfo Su\u00e1rez Madrid-Barajas<\/strong>, with a total of 165,740 operations (-61.1% less than in 2019). It is followed by Barcelona-El Prat, with 122,638 (-64.4%), Palma de Mallorca, with 76,851 (-64.6), Alicante-Elche with 37,153 (-63.4%) or Valencia with 35,900 (-53.8%).<\/p>\n

The breakdown by type of flight in 2020 was 51% international<\/strong>, 27% domestic and 22% overflights (flights that do not originate or terminate at a Spanish airport).<\/p>\n

Solidarity air transport<\/h2>\n

UNICEF<\/a>, the United Nations Children’s Fund, recently launched the “Humanitarian Air Transport Initiative”<\/strong>. A campaign in which more than 10 leading airlines, covering routes to more than 100 countries<\/strong>, will collaborate with the NGO for the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines<\/strong>, essential medicines or medical equipment<\/strong> to respond as best as possible to the pandemic.<\/p>\n

This action is also intended as a global logistical preparedness mechanism for other long-term health and humanitarian crisis, where air transport will once again be of crucial importance.
