It is a pioneering system because it is the world&#8217;s first <strong>emissions<\/strong> <strong>trading<\/strong> scheme applicable to the 27 Member States of the European Union, together with Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>1 January 2024<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stocklogistic.com\/en\/ocean-transport\/\">shipping companies<\/a> will have to rigorously monitor their emissions to ensure the required environmental compliance. The proportion of <strong>CO2<\/strong> emissions to be covered by allowances increases gradually each year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>2025<\/strong>: 40% of emissions reported by 2024 to be covered by allowances.<\/li><li><strong>2026<\/strong>: 70% by 2025.<\/li><li><strong>2027 onwards<\/strong>: 100% of reported emissions.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How are emissions monitored, reported and verified?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shipping companies covered by the<strong> EU ETS<\/strong> must have an approved <strong>monitoring<\/strong> plan to monitor and report annual emissions. Each year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stocklogistic.com\/en\/company\/\">companies<\/a> must submit an <strong>emissions report<\/strong> for each of the ships under their responsibility, as well as a company-level emissions report (which aggregates the ship data to be reported for ETS purposes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data for a given year must be <strong>verified <\/strong>by an accredited verifier by <strong>31 March<\/strong> of the following year (or by 28 February if requested by the administering authority). Once verified, companies must surrender (use) the equivalent number of <strong>allowances<\/strong> by 30 September of that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stocklogistic.com\/en\/\">Stock Logistic<\/a>, as a global logistics operator, is aware of the relevance and impact of these <strong>new regulations<\/strong> on the maritime sector and the environment. The ability to adjust to the new regulations with <strong>flexibility<\/strong> and <strong>commitment<\/strong> is a fundamental element in the company&#8217;s strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The impact of the ETS on the maritime sector<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to some studies, the implementation of the EU ETS could lead shipping companies to make a first stop in <strong>North Africa<\/strong>, the<strong> Adriatic Sea<\/strong>, the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> or the <strong>Eastern Mediterranean<\/strong> in order to avoid the costs of the levy.
