They are used in multimodal container transport, which mainly involves sea, rail or road transport<\/strong>. Above all, this standardised system is essential for international shipping<\/a>, where companies and ports in different countries must work in a coordinated manner, especially in large ports that handle thousands of containers daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Characteristics and composition of the ISO code<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To facilitate the recognition and enforcement of this code, there are a number of defining characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unique identification:<\/strong> each container has a unique ISO code that identifies the owner, the type of container and an individual serial number. This reduces handling errors and avoids problems of duplication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standard structure:<\/strong> the structure of the ISO code is consistent and consists of letters and numbers arranged in a specific format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International standard:<\/strong> ISO 6346 ensures that this system is recognised and used globally. It facilitates the exchange of information between companies and authorities in different countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sequence is composed of four letters or digits.<\/strong> The first element of the sequence is about the length of the container<\/strong>, with the most common codes being 2 (20-foot container) and 4 (40-foot container). The second element is about its height<\/strong>, with 2 (standard height of 8 feet 6 inches) and 5 (high cube container of 9 feet 6 inches) predominant.
